Placemat Service Project
2021 was the inaugural year for the PieceMakers Placemat Project. Early in the year it was
suggested that we ask members to make placemats to donate to Meals on Wheels, a nationwide non-profit program with services in all eight counties in the PieceMakers area. Founded in 1954 in Philadelphia, the mission of Meals on Wheels is to provide a nutritious meal, companionship, and a watchful eye on the health and safety of our homebound shut-ins.
In the midst of COVID-19, we found new opportunities to support that mission and help ourselves along the way. Perhaps it was having time go through our leftover fabrics and orphan blocks. Perhaps social distancing made us more aware of how much a small kindness is appreciated. Perhaps we all just needed a change from making masks! The outcome has been wonderful! Our placemats are a cheerful reminder to our seniors that they have not been forgotten.
Midway through our first year, PieceMakers has donated to the Meals on Wheels programs in three communities. We are looking forward to working with many more communities in our area.
Any style fabric placemat that is approximately 14” x 18” and can be machine washed and dried is welcomed! Please do not use any “holiday” specific prints. Remember to use some masculine prints! Here's a link to download a selection of patterns you can use: Placemats from 5" Squares
